South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Renews Contract with Pearson VUE for Nurse Aide Certification Exams

BLOOMINGTON, Minn., June 11, 2009 — Pearson VUE, the computer-based testing business of Pearson, has announced that the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (“Department”) has once again selected Pearson VUE to administer its Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation Program (SCNACEP). The contract was awarded following a competitive bidding process and is effective through 2014.

The Department initially selected Pearson VUE in 1996 to administer the SCNACEP, maintain the State’s nurse aide registry, and manage the recertification and reciprocity process. Since then, Pearson VUE has helped develop the program by working with the State to introduce improvements such as reducing the lag time for passing candidates to be entered into the registry—and thereby eligible for employment—from six weeks to one day, developing the South Carolina nurse aide Web site, and introducing oral and Spanish substitute exams.

Art Valentine, vice president of professional services and general manager of regulatory services at Pearson VUE, said, “Certified nurse aides fill a critical role in caring for the public. As the testing provider for South Carolina’s nurse aide program, Pearson VUE understands our responsibility in the certifying process and will continue to uphold the Department’s high standards for quality and safety.”

Robert Whelan, president and chief executive officer of Pearson VUE added, “The South Carolina Department of Heath and Human Services is one of our longest tenured nurse aide clients, and we are very pleased to see our relationship extended. This gives us the opportunity to further improve and expand the Department’s program for the benefit of South Carolina nurse aides and those in their care.”
