National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies Signs Computer-based Test Delivery Contract with Pearson VUE

BLOOMINGTON, Minn., June 23, 2009 — Pearson VUE, the computer-based testing business of Pearson, announced that it has signed a multi-year agreement with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). As of June 18, 2009, beta versions of the computer-based Fire Alarm Systems certification examinations are now available through Pearson VUE’s owned-and-operated Pearson Professional Centers in the U.S. and its territories. In addition, exams will be offered at select Pearson VUE® Authorized Test Centers located on military installations worldwide. NICET intends to migrate additional exams to the Pearson VUE delivery system over time.

Founded in 1961, NICET is a not-for-profit organization created by the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) to serve the certification needs of the engineering technology community. NICET (www.nicet.org) provides rigorous, affordable testing and certification services across a broad range of disciplines to engineering technicians and technologists nationwide.

As a respected authority in many technical fields, NICET regularly brings together industry leaders and subject matter experts to identify industry needs as well as design and maintain certification programs that promote technical knowledge and proficiency. The resulting programs measure the competency of, and layout career paths for, engineering technicians and technologists which results in a more highly skilled workforce. In addition, NICET promotes the continuing professional development of its certified technicians and technologists through a re-certification process that emphasizes updated skills and state-of-the-art knowledge.

“We are thrilled to move our certification programs from paper-and-pencil delivery to Pearson VUE’s computer-based delivery network, beginning with our Fire Alarm Systems exam,” said Mike Clark, Chief Operating Executive of NICET. “This transition allows us to offer our exams on-demand across the country, which will greatly increase access and convenience for our candidates.”

“We are pleased NICET chose Pearson VUE for its conversion from paper-and-pencil testing to computer-based testing. NICET recently celebrated a milestone of granting more than 125,000 certifications since its inception. This underscores the value that employers place on hiring qualified engineering technicians,” said Robert Whelan, president and chief executive officer of Pearson VUE. “We’re looking forward to contributing to NICET’s certification growth in the years ahead.”
