National Board of Examiners in Optometry Renews, Expands Contract with Pearson VUE
BLOOMINGTON, Minn., November 30, 2011 — Pearson VUE, the leader in secure high-stakes testing, announced today that it has renewed and expanded its contract with the National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO). Pearson VUE has delivered the Advanced Competency in Medical Optometry (ACMO) exam since 2005 and, going forward, will offer an additional exam through its network of Pearson Professional Centers.
NBEO develops and administers examinations that candidates must pass in order to become licensed optometrists in the United States and Puerto Rico. Its mission is to develop state-of-the-art assessments that fairly and accurately evaluate candidates’ knowledge and clinical skills in optometry.
“Protecting the health of patients is the backbone of our program,” said Dr. Jack Terry, NBOE executive director. “It’s essential that our testing partner understands the importance of our work and provides the service we need to accomplish our goals. Working with Pearson VUE these past years has been a terrific experience that gave us the assurance to not only renew, but expand our program with Pearson,” he said.
That expansion includes the delivery of the Part II-Patient Assessment & Management (PAM) examination, a core program for optometry students who are midway through their fourth academic year. The PAM will transition from paper and pencil to computer-based testing in spring 2012.
“We are so pleased that NBEO has given us this ultimate vote of confidence,” said Pearson VUE president and CEO Bob Whelan. “We’ve worked hard to earn it and are energized to continue building upon this strong relationship.”
