Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)
The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) advances medication safety by certifying pharmacy technicians who are qualified to support pharmacists and patient care teams in all practice settings. PTCB currently offers two national certification programs for pharmacy technicians, the Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) and the Certified Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician™ (CSPT™). Through these PTCB certification programs, pharmacy technicians are able to work more effectively with pharmacists to offer better patient care and service. The following is only a summary of PTCB’s programs. For more information, please visit www.ptcb.org.
To gain CPhT certification with PTCB, pharmacy technicians must meet eligibility requirements, which include a passing score on the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam® (PTCE®). Once a pharmacy technician becomes certified, he or she may use the designation “CPhT”. To maintain PTCB certification, CPhTs must recertify every two years. The purpose of recertification is to ensure that pharmacy technicians stay up-to-date in pharmacy practice through the completion of 20 hours of Continuing Education (CE).
Official PTCB Practice Tools
The Official PTCB Practice Exams have been constructed to familiarize candidates with the Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination (PTCE). There are two different exam forms available, each built to the same content specifications as the PTCE. Practice Exam content is largely composed of retired test questions, meaning that the questions on these tests will never appear on an actual examination. Please visit www.ptcb.org for more information.
Please Note: You will need a different username and password to book your practice exam.
PTCE Test Preparation
CPhT candidates should become familiar with the content outline of the PTCE. PTCB has developed Official PTCB Practice Exams for purchase that provides candidates an opportunity to experience question content, formats, and a test structure similar to the experience when sitting for the PTCE. Although PTCB does not provide training materials, there are many accredited pharmacy technician training providers. Additionally, Pearson VUE provides a generic tutorial that gives candidates an opportunity to experience the look, feel, and functionality they will encounter on the exam (please note that this tutorial is not PTCB specific, and some of the features, e.g. essay items, do not apply to the PTCE).
Certified Compounded Sterile Preparation Technicians (CSPTs) have demonstrated knowledge and skill in the specialty area of compounded sterile preparations (CSPs). Preparing CSPs, commonly referred to as sterile compounding, requires unique knowledge and skill that is above and beyond the standard for CPhTs. CSPTs practice under a licensed pharmacist in a variety of settings, including hospitals, home infusions centers, and other compounding facilities.
To apply to become a CSPT, a candidate must be a PTCB CPhT in good standing. In addition, CPhTs must either complete a PTCB-recognized sterile compounding training program and have one year of work experience in sterile compounding; or have 3 years of work experience in sterile compounding. Candidates must passed the CSPT Exam and submit a Competency Attestation Form within a 12-month candidacy period to become certified. Five hours of CE in sterile compounding and an updated Competency Attestation Form are required to meet annual recertification requirements. For additional details, please visit www.ptcb.org.
CSPT Exam Preparation
CSPT candidates should become familiar with the content outline of the CSPT Exam. PTCB provides two additional resource to aid candidates in their preparation, a CSPT Medications List and a CSPT References List. Additionally, Pearson VUE provides a generic tutorial that gives candidates an opportunity to experience the look, feel, and functionality they will encounter on the exam (please note that this tutorial is not PTCB specific, and some of the features, e.g. essay items, do not apply to the CSPT Exam). PTCB does not currently offer a CSPT practice exam.
