Q: We'd love to learn more about you and how you tackle your role. Could you share a bit about yourself and how you got to the role you're in?

I started at Pearson as an intern about 30 years ago, working in the Clinical division for 14 years, immersing myself in customer service and product management. Eventually, I joined Pearson VUE, where I continued engaging with customers, which remains my passion. Over time, I transitioned into consultative sales, leveraging my operational experience to understand customer needs and devise solutions.

Q: Can you describe your current role?

Since January 2025, my responsibilities have expanded, blending business development and academic initiatives. While I still manage partnerships with major clients like Microsoft and AWS, I now oversee Certiport, Pearson VUE’s academic arm, focusing on certifications for K-12 students to equip them with practical, job-ready skills. This role inspires me, as it bridges education and economic opportunities.

On the innovation front, my team led the launch of our generative AI certification program, which excites clients and reflects our commitment to staying ahead of industry trends. Balancing global partnerships, student empowerment, and emerging technologies keeps me energized.

Q: What does a typical day look like, and how do you unwind when things get hectic?

My day revolves around collaboration—coaching my team, supporting colleagues, and resolving customer issues. I thrive on moments of connection, whether brainstorming solutions or clearing obstacles for others. When life gets chaotic, I recharge by guiding teammates to succeed, which I find deeply fulfilling.

Q: What excites you about the changes in the industry and our business?

It’s thrilling to see how education and career pathways are evolving. The industry is breaking away from the traditional four-year degree model, offering new opportunities for underserved communities. Programs like entrepreneurship and small business certifications empower students to launch careers or businesses straight out of high school.

AI is another game-changer. Young learners, being AI natives, adapt seamlessly to new technologies, bringing innovation to the workforce. Supporting clients in integrating AI into their operations allows us to stay relevant, secure, and forward-thinking.

Q: What are the most important aspects of leading a business development team?

First, celebrating wins is crucial. In our meetings, we highlight success stories through “game tape reviews,” helping the team learn and grow. Second, listening thoughtfully is essential for building trust and empowering team members to find solutions. Finally, reflection helps connect the dots, enabling growth through feedback and shared experiences. For me, fostering a culture of celebration, active listening, and reflection is key. Recognizing wins, asking the right questions, and encouraging team members to grow through feedback all contribute to a thriving team dynamic.

Q: How is AI shaping customer expectations?

AI is transforming how businesses operate, especially in customer service, remote proctoring, and certification content. By bridging language barriers and increasing security, AI enhances customer satisfaction. Clients also rely on AI for rapid content generation and localization to keep certifications current—crucial in today’s fast-paced tech environment.

Q: What initiative are you most proud of?

I’m particularly proud of leading efforts to make our systems compatible with Apple devices. It was an ambitious project requiring collaboration across multiple teams, but we delivered on time, reshaping our capabilities and strengthening client relationships. This experience highlighted the power of teamwork and trust, which continues to inspire my work.

Q: Completely off topic—what’s your ideal breakfast?

Breakfast is my favorite meal. On busy mornings, I enjoy coffee and yogurt, but given unlimited time, I’d opt for a full spread of pancakes, eggs, and bacon. I also use food-related icebreakers with customers, sparking delightful conversations.

Q: What gets you excited about the way the industry is changing?

Looking back, my journey at Pearson feels incredible, especially since I’ve come from a modest background to leading impactful initiatives. Our industry’s shift toward inclusive opportunities excites me, as we’re creating paths for people from underserved communities. With tools like K-12 certifications, we empower students to succeed beyond the traditional college route. It’s inspiring to be part of such transformative work.

Q: Finally, what do you enjoy doing in your private life to unwind?

I cherish spending time outdoors, engaging in activities such as gardening, birdwatching, or walking along scenic trails. These activities provide an excellent way to relax and rejuvenate amidst the beauty of nature. Additionally, I enjoy unwinding by spending time near bodies of water. Residing in Minnesota, I take every opportunity to appreciate the natural environment, particularly after experiencing prolonged winters.
