Written Examination

The Australian Dental Council (ADC) Written Examination is designed to test the candidate’s knowledge of the science and practice of dentistry and to assess clinical judgement and reasoning skills relevant to dental practice in Australia.

Examination format

The Written Examination is normally held twice a year, over two full consecutive days. The examination consists of four 2-hour examination sections with each section consisting of 70 scenario-based multiple-choice questions. All four sections must be completed over the one examination session.

For more information regarding the Written Examination please refer to the ADC website and the Written Examination Handbook.

Authorisation

To book a place in the upcoming ADC Written Examination you must have been authorised by the ADC to sit the examination and have received an Authorisation to Test email from Pearson VUE.

Booking an examination

Once you have received your Authorisation to Test email from Pearson VUE, you may book a place in the Written Examination by selecting one of the following options:

The dates and venues of the ADC Written Examination covered by your authorisation will be available during the booking process. You have authorisation to book both Day One (Paper 1 and Paper 2) and Day Two (Paper 3 and Paper 4) examinations. You must book both examination days and must select the same venue for both days. Please see the Written Examination Handbook for further information on the booking policies.

Bookings will be open for approximately two weeks from the date of your Authorisation to Test email. Some venues have limited capacity and are allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis, so you should book as soon as possible once registrations are open.

Due to U.S. sanctions, Pearson VUE is unable to provide examination delivery services to residents of Syria unless the candidate can provide proof of primary residency outside of a sanctioned country. If you are a resident of Syria, you should contact the ADC for more information prior to submitting an application for the ADC Written Examination.

Special accommodations

Some candidates may require adjustments to the standard examination procedure due to special circumstances or disabilities.

If you would like to request a special accommodation, you must submit your request directly to the ADC in writing together with any supporting documentation. Do not proceed with booking an examination until you have received a response from the ADC.

Changing your booking

You may change your venue selection up until registration closure. Venue changes should be made via Pearson VUE.

If you have booked a place in an examination and later wish to withdraw you must contact the ADC directly and withdrawal fees apply. Please visit the ADC website for more details of the withdrawal process and withdrawal fees.

You cannot change a booking to a later examination. If you wish to sit the examination at a later date you must withdraw from the current examination session and reapply.

Change of contact details

You can update your contact details via ADC connect. Please note that any changes you may take up to a week to be reflected in the Pearson VUE system. If you have changed your name, you must notify the ADC via email at least two weeks before the examination date, and include any relevant supporting evidence.

Examination results

The ADC Written Examination results will be processed and issued by the ADC, and not Pearson VUE. To view the results release dates please refer to the ADC website.
