Effective October 1, 2024, prior authorization from the Office of the State Fire Marshal is no longer required to take your exam.  You will be able to create your account and register for your exam using the “Create an account” link beginning October 1, 2024.

The CAL FIRE Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) Fire Engineering & Investigations Division (FEI) is the licensing and certification authority for statewide programs which include Portable Fire Extinguishers, Flame Retardant Chemicals and Fabrics, Automatic Fire Extinguishing Systems, Fireworks, and Motion Picture and Entertainment.

Examinations are required components of the OSFM FEI licensing and certification program. The examinations are computer-based assessments of knowledge, competencies, and skills, and use a multiple-choice format. As preparation for OSFM FEI examinations, recommended courses and/or study materials are available.

All examination requirements are in our OSFM FEI Examination Handbook. You are responsible for knowing all examination requirements and policies.

Scheduling

Exam appointments may be made 24 hours in advance on the day you wish to test, subject to availability. The exam/appointment testing time limit noted on Pearson VUE web pages reflects the total appointment time, including a non-disclosure agreement, exam time, and survey.

Rescheduling and Cancellations

Exam appointments may be rescheduled or cancelled 48 hours in advance on the day you wish to test.
