American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM)

The American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) is a Member Board of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) and a non-profit corporation. Preventive Medicine is the specialty of medical practice that focuses on the health of individuals, communities, and defined populations. Its goal is to protect, promote, and maintain health and well-being and to prevent disease, disability, and death. Preventive medicine specialists have core competencies in biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental and occupational medicine, planning and evaluation of health services, management of healthcare organizations, research into causes of disease and injury in population groups, and the practice of prevention in clinical medicine. They apply knowledge and skills gained from the medical, social, economic, and behavioral sciences.

Preventive Medicine includes the specialties of Aerospace Medicine, Occupational and Environmental Medicine or Public Health and General Preventive Medicine, and the subspecialties of Addiction Medicine, Clinical Informatics, Medical Toxicology, or Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine.

Application information

Before scheduling an examination appointment with Pearson, you must have already

  1. completed the ABPM application;
  2. paid the designated fee; 
  3. met all requirements; and
  4. received an Authorization-to-Test email.

Scheduling your exam appointment

Your Authorization‑to‑Test (ATT) email includes the date range in which you can take your exam. You are responsible for booking your appointment within that timeframe. Exam appointments can be scheduled up to one business day in advance, and test center availability is offered on a first‑come, first‑served basis.

Create your Pearson account

You will need a Pearson account before you can schedule your exam. When creating your account, use the same name, phone number, and email address that you provided to ABPM in your application. You will also be asked to enter your 20‑character PTI ID.

Schedule, reschedule, or cancel your appointment

You are responsible for managing your own exam appointment. Appointments can be scheduled up to one business day in advance, and test center availability is offered on a first‑come, first‑served basis.

After you schedule

Once your appointment is confirmed, Pearson will send you a confirmation email that includes your exam date and time, the test center address, and important policies to review before test day. 

You will receive a confirmation email whenever you schedule, reschedule, or cancel an appointment.

If you do not receive a confirmation email, please sign in to your Pearson account to verify your appointment status.
