Online testing requirements

Is OnVUE the right choice for you? Before you book, all test takers must ensure they can meet the minimum requirements listed below. Failure to do so on exam day can result in immediate exam cancellation and forfeiture of your exam fee.

Please note, all Department of State tests are conducted without breaks. Please confirm your appointment length from your email confirmation and plan accordingly. Remember, if you move outside of the view of your webcam at any point, your testing session will be terminated and your test results will be invalidated.

Technology Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • Windows 10 or macOS 14 (or higher)
  • Working webcam, microphone, and speaker (no headphones or headsets) *
  • One display screen only (multi-monitor setups are not permitted)
  • Stable internet connection with at least 6 Mbps download and 2 Mbps upload
  • Ability to close all applications except OnVUE

Prohibited Technology

  • Virtual machines or beta operating systems
  • Mobile phones, tablets, headphones, earbuds, styluses, and watches *
  • Smart or connected devices with recording or AI features (smart speakers, smart glasses)
  • Secondary or touchscreen displays (disconnect and cover if not removable)
  • VPNs, corporate networks, or public/shared networks

Before Exam Day

  • Run and pass the System Test on the same device and network you’ll use on exam day
  • Restart your computer to free system resources
  • Ensure no one else is using the network for streaming or large downloads

* Some programs allow specific exceptions—check your exam’s policies and allowances.
